In 1987 was celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of scientist, archaeologist, historian Joseph Abgarovich Orbeli, member of many academies of the world, the Hermitage Director for over 25 years. The film is based on several episodes from the life of Orbeli: an appeal to Stalin in 1930-ies regarding the sale of the Hermitage property abroad, the years of the siege, the discussion on problems of linguistics in the 1950-ies.
