Vladimir Khotinenko graduated with honors from the Sverdlovsk Architectural Institute in 1976, then served in the army in the internal troops of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In 1978-1982, he was a production designer at the Sverdlovsk Film Studio on the films "Race with Pursuit", "Smoke of the Fatherland", "Cossack Outpost", "This is Such Music", "Mirror for a Hero".
In 1982, he graduated from the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors (workshop of N. Mikhalkov).
He worked as an assistant director for Nikita Mikhalkov on the films "A Few Days in the Life of I. I. Oblomov", "Five Evenings", "Relatives".
