"Bryansk Pinkertons" (Doubles).
In May 1999, 62-year-old retired officer V. S. Leonov was detained in his apartment by Bryansk police officers and placed in a pretrial detention center.
Only a week later, his family learned that he had been arrested on suspicion of a double murder committed in the city of Kolomna.
Leonov denied his guilt, stated that he had never been to Kolomna and tried in vain to see a lawyer for three months.
It is unknown how much more time he would have spent in prison if the real killer had not voluntarily turned himself in to the police in August - V. S. Leonov, a resident of Kolomna, who had hacked to death two of his drinking buddies with an axe a year before.
As it turned out, the Bryansk "Pinkertons" were misled only by the fact that the full names of the wanted criminal and the retired officer were completely identical.
It turned out that Kolomna Leonov was detained at the crime scene, confessed to everything, but was released on bail due to his disability and advanced age.
He was put on the wanted list by mistake, since he was not hiding from the court at all, but simply spent a long time in the city hospital.
This "mistake" of the police resulted in the fact that officer Leonov, who had suffered a stroke shortly before his arrest, spent 3 months in prison and soon died.
The officer's widow filed a lawsuit against the officials she believed to be guilty of her husband's death, and won the case.
According to the court's decision, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the prosecutor's office must pay her 2,000 rubles each for moral damages.
However, this decision has not yet been implemented, and the guilty parties have even been promoted.
Moreover, the Bryansk police have begun to settle scores with people who supported the widow in court.
