Meeting on the Elbe, 1945.

On 24 April 1945 near the town of Torgau units of the 1st Ukrainian front came to the Eastern shore of the river Elbe, the next morning in the West Bank there were soldiers of the 1st American army.

This event is known in history as "the Meeting on Elba".

The fraternization of the soldiers of the allied troops on the Elbe became a symbol of total victory over Nazi Germany.

In Moscow on this occasion was made solemn salute.

Newspapers around the world carried the headlines: the war is almost completed, and there is quite a bit.

But that "little" was still a long two weeks of war...
