The Odessa motor ship, owned by the Black Sea Shipping Company (Odessa, Ukraine), was arrested for the shipping company's debts in the port of Naples in 1995. In 1997, a replacement crew of ten people arrived on board.

They were promised decent travel allowances - however, practically all this time, none of the crew members received a cent.

Moreover, the trip, which was supposed to take 3-4 months, has dragged on a bit: the sailors are preparing to celebrate their fourth New Year on board the Odessa.

The ship has no electricity, heat, etc.

They are barely able to get money for food - mainly from compatriots working illegally in Italy.

The families who remained in Odessa have already despaired of waiting for their husbands and fathers, who have decided at all costs to wait for the payment of all the money owed to them...
