Terrorist act in Kizlyar

Russia. Republic of Dagestan. Kizlyar. Participants in a mourning rally for the victims of Chechen militants, which took place in anticipation of the end of the hostage-freeing operation near the village of Pervomayskoye. On January 9, 1996, Chechen militant groups attacked the city, taking several hundred hostages. After fruitless negotiations, the terrorists and their captives headed toward the border with Chechnya, where they were blocked by federal forces. Valery Matytsin/TASS
