On April 26, 1986, an explosion occurred at the fourth power unit of the NPP during equipment testing during the reactor shutdown for routine preventive maintenance. After decontamination of the area and the construction of a "Shelter" over the destroyed power unit, the first, second and third power units were put back into operation.
